Who operates this game, how to reach them, and what it does with data, stated exactly. Every claim about data below describes code you can read in this page's source.

This game is a personal project, operated and hosted in the United States by a private individual, and not on behalf of any institution, employer, publisher, church or state. It is free, and carries no advertising and no sponsorship. Responsible for its content: Dr. Pantaleon Fassbender, at the address above.
Rights. The quotations and paraphrases on the cards come from public-domain sources carried in the documentary apparatus Calculemus: Philosophical predecessors of AI, which names each printed edition. The game's own texts are the author's.
Links. The ✦ citations open the documentary apparatus, a site run by the same operator. Where the game links elsewhere, the content is the responsibility of its operator.
No warranty. A game is a model, not a history: its numbers are abstractions and its outcomes are not claims about what could have happened. It is offered free of charge and without warranty of any kind.
Privacy notice
Who is responsible. The operator named above. Because the game is reachable from the European Economic Area, this notice is written to satisfy the General Data Protection Regulation as well as United States law; where the GDPR applies, the operator is the controller within the meaning of Article 4(7).
What the game is, technically. A set of static files: a page, a script, a stylesheet and the card deck as a data file. It runs entirely in your browser. There is no server-side program, no account, no login, no form, and no score is ever sent anywhere; the benchmark against bot games is computed on your own device. The game sets no cookies, uses no analytics or advertising service, calls no artificial-intelligence service, and loads nothing from third-party servers: fonts are those installed on your device, and the data come from this site itself.
The autosave on your device. So that a game survives closing the tab, the game keeps the current game in your browser's local storage, under the name calculemus_game: the station, the five elements, Insight, Control and Hubris, the questions named, answered or dismissed, the incidents drawn, the chronicle and the random seed. Nothing else is stored. The entry contains no personal information and is never sent anywhere. It persists until you delete it, which you can do by clearing this site's data in your browser settings; starting a new game overwrites it. If your browser blocks local storage, the game still plays, but will not remember a game after the tab is closed.
Server logs. The game is hosted by Netlify, whose infrastructure records the requests it serves, typically the IP address, time, the address requested, the status, the amount of data transferred, and the browser's user-agent and referrer strings. This is technically unavoidable in delivering a website and is the only collection of data about players. It is used to operate and secure the service, not to build profiles, and the operator does not analyse it. Where the GDPR applies, the legal basis is Article 6(1)(f); retention follows Netlify's own periods. For players in the European Economic Area this means their request data are processed in the United States, by the operator and by Netlify Inc.
Rights. Where the GDPR applies, you have the rights of access (Art. 15), rectification (Art. 16), erasure (Art. 17), restriction (Art. 18), portability (Art. 20) and objection (Art. 21); requests go to the address above, and you may lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (Art. 77). Apart from the server logs, the game holds nothing about you. No representative in the Union has been designated under Article 27; the operator relies on the exemption in Article 27(2)(a), the processing being occasional and unlikely to result in a risk to the rights and freedoms of natural persons.
California (CalOPPA). The only personally identifiable information collected is network activity in the server logs described above, shared with the hosting provider (Netlify Inc.) only, and never sold or used for marketing. There are no accounts to review or amend. The game does not track players over time or across other sites, so a Do Not Track signal changes nothing; no third party collects information about players here. Material changes will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
Children. The game is addressed to adults and older students, is not directed to children, and knowingly collects no information from them.
Effective 2 October 2026. Where this notice and the game's behaviour ever diverge, the notice is wrong and will be corrected.
